Great Blue Heron Cove

Our current vision for Great Blue Heron Cove is to create a simple trail system that would allow passive recreation on the property. Walkers and hikers would be able to experience the natural beauty of the plant, bird, and water habitats that exist within the boundaries of this permanently protected property without disturbing the existing ecosystem. The trail would also allow people access to the site of the stately granite monument that honors Mr. and Mrs. Leonard White. The White family grew up on the waters of Charlton Reservoir and their gift to CHPT of Great Blue Heron Cove ensures that this breathtaking area will remain in its natural state for other families to enjoy now and in the future.

In order to achieve our goal of opening the site to passive recreation, the property would have to be evaluated and assessed. Sensitivity to the area is essential as Great Blue Heron Cove encompasses the north end of the cove at South Charlton Reservoir and is considered part of the lake's watershed.

History of the Great Blue Heron Cove Property:

David and Shirley White, Janie Larson, Susan Premo, and Wendy Bowen, the children of Leonard and Ann White, donated this environmentally sensitive area to CHPT on July 27, 2002 at a dedication ceremony held to commemorate their parents 60th Wedding Anniversary. The White Family surprised their parents with the dedication ceremony during which they unveiled a stone monument with an engraved plaque that says "Great Blue Heron Cove". Mr. and Mrs. Leonard White are stunned by the dedication ceremony and were clearly pleased that the family chose to preserve this area as open space. "Protecting its future now ensures that others can appreciate and enjoy it for years to come", said David White. CHPT was honored to accept this 18.98 acre parcel of land encompassing "the cove" on South Charlton Reservoir.
