Volunteers Needed!
Seeking Board
Members!
Charlton Heritage Preservation Trust is governed by a 9 member Board of Trustees. CHPT Trustees are seeking preservation and conservation minded individuals to fill 4 vacancies on this all volunteer board. Trustees are required to be Charlton residents and CHPT Members. Attendance is essential at regular Board of Trustee meetings which are held in town on the 3rd Monday of each month. In addition, Trustees attend the annual meeting of the members in February which is also open to the public. Trustees are responsible for all administrative and financial aspects of the Trust, reviewing parcels and deeds, conducting site visits, and generally overseeing the 156 acres currently owned by the Trust. Trustees may be appointed by the Board to serve until the February annual meeting at which time the Trustees must be elected by the membership for a one year term. This is an excellent opportunity for Charlton residents with a wide variety of skills to make a personal impact on the future of land preservation in Charlton. If you are interested in serving as a Trustee, please call Lisa Westwell at 508-248-5121.
Volunteer Property Stewards
Do you love to walk or hike in the woods? Do you notice flowers, animal tracks, and trees? Do you whisper to yourself when you see changes, good or bad, in the lands you love? Do you like to explore new places in town or are you an abutter to CHPT owned open space and already keep an eye on things? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you would make an excellent Volunteer Property Steward! CHPT is responsible for the stewardship of 156 acres of open space spread out over 12 separate parcels in Charlton. Stewardship is the careful and responsible management of the land entrusted to our care. Proper management of the land requires consistent monitoring. Volunteer Property Stewards (VPSs) would be responsible for monitoring activities, including walking CHPT property boundaries and interiors of parcels, looking for and documenting signs of natural changes in habitat, noting any man made infringements or activities that violate deeds or conservation restrictions for each parcel, photographing the property at multiple fixed locations to provide a permanent record, and assisting CHPT in evaluating parcels over time. A minimum of two individuals would be assigned to steward a parcel or group of parcels. Documentation forms would be provided for twice yearly monitoring of land. Stewards would be appointed by and report directly to the Board of Trustees. Volunteer Property Stewards represent a vital component of open space management and as a Property Steward volunteer, you will be get the great satisfaction of knowing that your efforts help keep the open space in Charlton well maintained and pristine. If you are interested in becoming a VPS, call Lisa Westwell at 508-248-5121.

"Empties for Open Space"
Charlton Heritage Preservation Trust has a unique fundraising program called Empties for Open Space! The
next time you visit Ted's Redemption Center adjacent to Ted's Package
Store on Route 20 in Charlton, check out CHPT's poster and consider
donating your can/bottle receipts to us! It's so easy! Just put the
receipt into the box instead of claiming the deposit. We will redeem
them and all proceeds will go to CHPT. We would like to express our
thanks to Ted Mroczkowski for allowing us to hang the poster and the
box at Ted's Redemption Center. We appreciate your support! For more
information on CHPT or the Empties for Open Space program, please
call Lisa at (508) 248-5121.
OR, Do you have lots
of empty bottles and cans, but no time to redeem them? Is conservation
and preservation worth your nickel? We hope so! There are many ways
to increase conservation awareness in our community and recycling
is one of them. So, CHPT has been working on ideas for the creation
of a bottle and can recycling program in Charlton. We have dubbed
it “Empties for Open Space”. We would like to work with local businesses
to provide employees and/or residents a place to bring their empty
cans and bottles. CHPT would pick them up on a regular basis and redeem
them. It would be a continuous can/bottle drive!! This program would
make it easy for people to turn in their cans and bottles and at the
same time provide CHPT with some much needed funding. Seems simple
enough, but to make it work, we need recycling equipment (namely bins
and bags) and YOU! If you are an individual or business interested
in helping us get this program off the ground, or if you have clean
cans and bottles that you would like to donate to us to redeem, please
call Lisa at 508-248-5121. |

- Copy paper (8 1/2 x 11 white)
- Gift cards:
Staples, Wal-Mart, grocery stores

Stamps are used for
correspondence, occassional newsletters, and special event mailings
or announcements. Assessors maps, aerial maps, trail maps, brochures,
and grant applications are just some of the documents we routinely
print. Introductory letters to abutters with copies of Deeds also
require large volume printing. We do our best to use both sides to
cut down on paper use. Gift cards allow us to purchase a variety of
supplies, including refreshments for our annual meeting and lunch/beverages
for volunteers. A metal detector would aid us in identifying boundary pins on our properties. Even small donations make a big difference!
